Renegade Sounds

Renegade Sounds is the label division of Renegade Productions Inc.

Founded in Vancouver Canada at the turn of the century, Renegade Sounds’ first releases was the legendary Back From the Dead by Renegade*. This melodic rock CD originally recorded in 1988, caught on initially in Germany and spread quickly throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Noticing there was a demand for this type of melodic rock, the label followed up with On the Edge also by Renegade. This led to a search of Vancouver studios for other great AOR rock bands from the 80’s and releases by Matrex, Vertigo and Stiletto followed. A very special release followed called Zingo, the original young band featuring Bryan Adams’ guitarist virtuoso Keith Scott, who also played on the next release by Renegade “The Story of My Life”.

Next up, The Picassos, a new band based in both Zurich and Vancouver. All songs are published by Arpieye Music.

*Renegade had to change the name on some sites to Renegadeinc due to a trademark dispute even though our Renegade was first.

Cam van As and Rob Begg have known each other since the late 1980's. Cam was a multi instumenalist and fledgling songwriter while Rob had just returned from Los Angeles and was kicking around in various Vancouver bar bands. By chance they met at a party and discovered a shared interest in power pop. They soon began working together writing their own songs. Rob writes, plays bass and guitar while Cam sings, plays guitar and keyboards and does the drum programming. Rob and Cam love pop music.....if you do too, you're going to enjoy this!

Listen to The Story of My Life on Bandcamp!

The Renegade band, from Vancouver Canada, takes an advanced approach in the selection of compositions, machines, and ideas. The musical territory defined by the Vancouver group is a condition of the independent and determined ‘renegade’ attitude.

Direction is as much a function of avenues opened by technology, as it is a commitment to being real, in lyrics and in performance. The material is treated honestly and romantically, and the style is natural. The group and concept have matured into a pop format that is wide in scope. The continuous interaction within the group and in the surrounding musical network have produced a depth and quality of performance, and a realistic attitude toward composing. The level of human concern is hot, the images are stark and the Renegade style is identifiable and believable.

The members of Renegade are:

Marti Sippola– vocals
Jim Buckshon– bass, guitar, keys, drums
Geraldo Dominelli– guitars, keys, vocals, BG’s
Paul Minshall – BG’s
Keith Scott– guest artist guitar

Live and studio musical production incorporates applicable digital and sampling techniques to render the musical statement in the clearest possible manner. The high charged emotion is not lost in machines however, and the material is dealt with naturally and with subtlety. The layering format, spontaneous performance, and an honest, intelligent approach provide the cohesive strength of the production.

The band is already successful in achieving this degree of substance. Renegade is now in the process of commercialization of the product through a comprehensive marketing strategy, while rooting itself to a strong moral fiber. This type of approach will ensure long-term development of the band, and the acceptance in the musical community. With devotion to values that are shared universally, Renegade intends to survive and grow in contemporary music.

Listen to Zingo on Bandcamp!

Zingo was formed in Vancouver, Canada in the early 70's by three friends; Vince Nardulli, Dave Skinner, and Frank Dato, who grew up and played together through their high school years. After adding Keith Scott on guitar (who went on to record & tour with Bryan Adams to this day) and Joe Alvaro on bass, the third version of Zingo became the notable lineup that recorded songs that ultimately became the album released here. The group played hundreds of nights per year in Vancouver clubs on the same circuit as acts such as BTO and Heart. The band then started writing, performing and recording original material which led to arena shows with international recording artists such as The Beach Boys, John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat, and Brownsville Station. This caught the attention of John Schroeder, producer of Status Quo, who signed Zingo to a single record deal in the UK with Harbour Records, recorded at the world famous Little Mountain Studios. The 4th version of Zingo added Michael Skinner on flute and saxophone. The Zingo lineup were known to be dynamic performers who loved to rock on stage but also were accomplished funk and jazz fusion players, experimenting in many different styles. This blend of showmanship and musicianship combined with well-crafted songs made them a very popular band, remembered to this day by Vancouver fans and now released to a worldwide audience that has shown great interest in this very unique and talented group.

After a Bryan Adams concert in 2010, Keith Scott (Bryan's guitar player) was asked what had happened to all the recordings Zingo had done in the 70's before he joined Adams. He hadn't a clue, nor did David Skinner, co-founder of the band & the other main songwriter. An archival search of every possible tape vault and engineer/producers ensued & what we have is the record assembled here. Some of the songs were remixed after multitracks were found, some from 1/4" mixes, some from vinyl and some even from cassettes. That explains the varying quality. Vince Nardulli (the lead singer & great front man) passed away before his time in 1989 & 2 new songs were added, Love Of a Dream & Backstabber sang by Keith & Dave respectively.

Listen to Spin on Bandcamp!

Renegade Sounds presents Stiletto from Vancouver Canada. This amazing album entitled Spin, is a fresh and new collection of melodic rock songs featuring both undiscovered gems from the late 80's and 90's and re-mastered versions of a few songs already hits in the AOR world. Stiletto features the superb vocals of David Steele, known for his harmony work on Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, The Cult, and Motley Crue and as lead vocalist for Double Dealer.

Virtuoso guitarist Kenny Geatros, also in Double Dealer as well as Renegade, co-wrote and co-produced and adds to the talented team on this album, which also features John Webster and Ken Lomas of Aerosmith production fame, Paul Dean from Loverboy, and Jim Buckshon from Renegade Sounds. Backing musicians during the Stiletto days include Gary Koenig, John Dryden, Randy Booth (RIP), Jim Buckshon and Joey Alvaro on bass, Ronnie Baran, Rick Fedyk, Lorne Etkin, Burt Richardson, and Theo Thunder on drums, Paul Minshall, Darcy MacDonald, Bill Bressler and Kevin Williams on keyboards, and David Steele, Ronnie Baran, John Dryden, Paul Minshall, Paul Gaffney, and Sue Leonard on background vocals Carefully selected, tastefully put-together songs makes Spin an album that you will not want to miss.

Note from the producers: In the summer of 2009, a tape of 4 songs by Stiletto made their way to Renegade Sounds. Almost simultaneously, an email from an AOR fan came in, asking if the label knew the musicians responsible for the song 'Freedom'. Turns out these were one and the same, and a vault full of unreleased songs recorded in the late 80's and early '90's were discovered. After much listening and discussion, it was decided to pick the best of the songs from both the released and unreleased catalogues, and make this record.

Producers: Kenny Geatros and David Steele
Executive producer Jim Buckshon

Listen to Takes Me Back on Bandcamp!

Vertigo was formed in 1989/90 by Rob Begg, Rick Spolar, and Cam Vanas. After a brief stint with another member, the three pop souls decided to go in a more meaningful direction. Rob had recently returned from the highly acclaimed Music Institute of Technology in the bass guitar program after leaving the band MATREX, where he was replaced by Jim Buckshon. In Los Angeles, Rob began writing songs with members from Tom Petty’s band as well as the late 70’s band The Knack. After leaving Los Angeles, Rob teamed up with Rick Spolar, fresh from a local group called The Freeze, which later evolved into The Billboard Heroes.

Rick’s great leadership skills and love for power pop were extremely important to the emerging power writing trio team. Last but not least, Cam Vanas with his boyish good looks and pipes to die for, became Rob’s missing link for the power pop songs in his head.

Vertigo was inspired by the 1970’s power pop sound of bands like The Raspberries and the 80’s super group The Outfield. In their short time frame, Vertigo played along side bands like The Romantics, Nazareth and Bob Rock, tooling their pop sound ultimately to what you hear on this record. The band used various producers, but learned most of their craft by working with the famous Jack Richardson.

Years later, the songs on this CD made their way back to Jim Buckshon, who by now had become established as label head for Renegade Sounds, which has released successful melodic hard rock albums from Renegade and MATREX. The label and the band are excited to announce the worldwide release of Takes Me Back by Vertigo, scheduled for fall 2007.

Listen to I’ll Always Remember on Bandcamp!

Formed in the early 80’s in Vancouver Canada, MATREX burst onto the hard rock scene with a band full of melodies and harmonies. Formed by Tony Dominelli (vocals) and Geraldo Dominelli (guitar/vocals), the brothers were joined by friends Paul Minshall (keyboards/vocals) Rob Begg (bass) and Lee Hantelmann (drums).

The band quickly became popular and sold out large clubs nightly with it’s hard rockin’ sounds and great stage show. Many songs were recorded during this time, including You Won’t See Tears, Long Distance Kiss, Love Me Through the Night, and She’s a Stranger. These songs feature world-famous Mike Fraser (engineer) and Keith Scott (producer).

Shortly after, bassist Rob Begg was replaced by Jim Buckshon (Renegade) who helped steer the band through it’s next set of recordings. Produced by Joel van Dyke, MATREX recorded the hard rocker Move Too Fast, the power ballad I’ll Always Remember, the poppier song Looking For Number One, and the introspective Nothing is Real.

Next was the recording of the band’s first vinyl 45, which featured the great classic I Don’t Want Anybody (multiple weeks on Canadian radio) and the powerful Broken Hearted Man (produced by Joel Van Dyke, assisted by Jim Buckshon and Geraldo Dominelli).

Released for the fist time to worldwide audiences in 2005, the CD entitled I’ll Always Remember
(RS004) assembles these great undiscovered classic melodic rock tunes into one cohesive theme album. All songs were composed by MATREX and feature the writing talents of Geraldo and Tony Dominelli, as well as Rob Begg and Paul Minshall. Additional writing contributed by Jim Buckshon & Lee Hantelmann. Mixing of the Fraser/Scott sessions was by Geraldo Dominelli and Jim Buckshon.
